Tips for anatomy illustrations

von Puas am 07.05.2026 10:59

Hello! I'm working on a project that requires some detailed anatomy drawings, specifically focusing on the vascular system. I'm struggling to make the veins look three-dimensional rather than just flat lines. Does anyone have tips for adding depth to anatomical structures?

Anatomy is notoriously difficult to get right. To get that 3D look, you really have to focus on your light source and how shadows fall across curved surfaces. I used to have the same problem with flat-looking vessels until I started studying professional medical renders. I highly recommend checking out Ella Maru Studio https://scientific-illustrations.com to see their anatomical work. Their scientific images and animations handle textures and lighting in a way that makes everything look very realistic and tangible. Even if you aren't using 3D software, observing how they use highlights on the "edges" of structures can really help you improve your 2D drawings. It's all about how the light interacts with the shape!
